The beauty of watercolour

Watercolour has always been a very popular painting medium for both amateur and professional painters. The joy of ‘Pushing a puddle around’ (Ken Howard’s words not mine), riskily dropping wet paint into wet or glazing transparent washes over dry colour on crisp white paper takes some beating.

Over the holiday period, the two main watercolour societies will both have exhibitions in London, celebrating the beauty of the medium and promoting the traditional as well as the experimental and contemporary. I recommend putting both dates in your diary:

Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours

Mall Galleries
5th – 18th April

Royal Watercolour Society
Bankside Gallery
22nd March – 20th April

Kathryn Tyrrill reviews the RWS exhibition very well on her brilliant ‘Making a Mark’ blog here.

At Insight School of Art we love watercolour too and will be running ‘An Introduction to Watercolour’ on Thursday afternoons next term for people who have never been taught how to use the medium. The excellent Michael Kirkbride NEAC will be teaching students everything they need to know, from mixing colours and laying a wash to successfully painting landscapes, still life and people.

You can book this ‘all materials included’ classes online here.

We are also running four mixed ability watercolour classes each term, so if a beginners class isn’t for you or if it’s not at a convenient time, you might like to join one of these instead:

Barnet:
Mondays 7-9pm with Rob Verrill
Tuesday 10.15am – 12.30pm with Michael Kirkbride NEAC
Wednesday 10.15 – 12.30pm with Lara Sparey

(Full List of Barnet classes here)

St Albans
Fridays 12.30pm – 2.45pm with Karen Walters

(Full list of St Albans classes here)

If you would like Insight School of Art to teach you how to become a better painter next term you can click the above links to choose a class and book a place. If you’d prefer to book over the phone, please call us on 020 8441 6153 when our office reopens on the 9th April.

I hope you are having a lovely Easter break. See you next term.
