The Royal Academy Summer Show
I had a really good day at the Royal Academy Summer Show last Friday. It was interesting thinking about the statistics given on the Culture Show about the success rate of artists who enter work through the Open Submission process:
11,000 people submitted work this year
1,200 pieces on display
800 pieces by non academicians
but only 200 works by first time exhibitors.
Therefore if you haven’t shown before you have a 1.8% chance of being selected.
I also did a few calculations of my own:
With about 40% of the works produced in oils and 30% prints, artists who work in acrylics, watercolour, drawing or mixed media have a much lower chance of selection.
Also, due to the large number of small paintings squeezed into the ever popular Small Western Room, I estimate that about a third of the total works selected are smaller than A3 in size. Is this the best size to enter next year?
