New ISoA teacher displays portraits

In preparation for next term, we’ve just put up five paintings by Matt Davies in our gallery. Matt’s our newest member of staff and will be teaching alongside Paul Regan on the Wednesday and Friday 4.45pm children’s classes.

Matt studied at Northumbria University and has since been the art specialist at St Mary’s Primary School in Hornsey. In September 2016 he will be starting his career in Secondary School teaching at Heron Hall Academy in Enfield.

Matt’s large oil paintings mostly derive from film stills, capturing moments that would otherwise perhaps go unnoticed. It’s not the films themselves that are important to him, but the situation behind the gaze of a character. His process involves using a relatively low tech camera to take photos of films stopped at particular points, which he then edits to adjust the picture, applying slight changes of contrast and exposure to change one’s perspective of the situation.
