Celestine Thomas is in her last year at Middlesex University studying Fine Art. When she was at secondary school she also attended classes at Insight School of Art, and from 16 years old she has been working here as a Part Time Studio Assistant. Trainee Manager Charlotte Milburn asked her a few questions about her relationship with Insight School of Art, her degree course and the artwork that she makes.

CM: When did you become interested in art?

CT: Art was always my favourite subject in school, so it continued from a young age.

CM : How long were you a student at Insight School of Art?

CT: For about 5 years, ever since I was about 13yrs old.

CM: How did classes at Insight School of Art benefit you?

CT: The classes gave me a wide knowledge of materials and techniques. When I left school, my portfolio consisted mostly of work I had done at Insight School of Art and I used it for my University application for an Art and Design intensive foundation course.

CM: Not only did you come to classes at Insight School of Art, but you also work here. How long have you been an employee and what do you like most about working here?

CT: 4 years. I like the fact that it’s a relaxed working environment. It’s unique and I like helping children with their artwork, it’s a rewarding experience.

CM: What aspects of the school do you like most?

CT: It’s different from the conventional school criteria and education system. It’s more creative in the way it approaches teaching and learning.

CM: What and where are you studying at the moment?

CT: I am studying BA Fine Art at Middlesex University. At the moment I am working with colour, light and found objects , manipulating materials in order to create environmental installations.

CM: Who is your most influential artist?

CT: David Bachelor, as his work related to the themes of my own, contemporary sculpture.
CM: Where can people see your work? Are you involved with any exhibitions?

CT: I exhibited my work at cre8 space as part of a group for a University exhibition, entitled ‘restricted space’ and last week I exhibited at Watch this Space at the Beaconsfield gallery.

I have an upcoming exhibition in March at the Truman Brewery in Shoreditch. It will be a showcase of third year university work.
