What level class is best for me?
Level 1: Absolute Beginners These classes are aimed at absolute beginners only: people who have never had any previous tuition in the advertised medium. Each lesson is delivered as a workshop, introducing the basic painting techniques and passing on knowledge about materials, so that students can start painting with confidence. Every exercise on a level one course is demonstrated by the tutor before students have a go themselves. All materials are provided for level one classes. Most students who attend a level 1 course will move on to a higher level of class or try another level 1 class using a different medium.
Level 2/1: Beginners This level is similar to the structure of a level 2 class, though the delivery of workshops will be adjusted to accommodate students who have had no previous tuition.
Level 2: Improvers Students who attend a level 2 class have usually had some tuition in the past using the advertised medium, and therefore have a basic knowledge of materials and techniques. Half of the lessons each term are delivered as informative workshops, aimed at developing students’ knowledge and understanding of the medium. Workshops are delivered in two blocks of three, with each block focusing on a different theme; Landscape, still life or people. Other lessons are devoted to allowing students to produce artwork of their own choice with assistance from one of Insight’s experienced teachers to ensure regular improvement. Students will usually benefit from moving to a higher level class after about two years. People who are absolute beginners or work at a higher level than this may enrol if the time and day is the most convenient. However, workshops will be aimed at level 2 students which may not be so suitable.
Level 2/3: Improvers These mixed level classes are suitable for level 2 and 3 students. though workshops will be geared more towards level 2 students.
Level 3: Advanced Students who attend a level three class have usually had at least two years of tuition previously with the advertised medium. Students who attend a level three class can expect to be working alongside other artists with a very good level of skills and knowledge. The format of each term is the same as a level 2 class, though students will be challenged to a greater extent and encouraged to express their own ideas and develop their own style of working. Students who work at a lower level than this may enrol if the time and day is the most convenient. However, workshops will be aimed at level 3 students which may not be so suitable.
